What Can I Buy with My PDSES Grant?

Under Texas law (Texas Education Code, Section 29.041), the PDSES program allows parents to use their $1,500 grant to purchase supplemental instructional materials and supplemental services that provide a direct educational benefit to their child. In plain terms, "supplemental instructional materials" means any learning tool or resource designed to help your child build skills in a subject area covered by the state curriculum. That includes things like curriculum guides, educational workbooks, hands-on learning kits, sensory tools that support focus and regulation, technology devices, and any other material that contributes to your child's learning. It also includes services like tutoring, speech therapy, occupational therapy, and other specialized instruction. The key requirement is that everything you purchase must directly benefit your child's education. Items or services that don't have a clear educational purpose, like daycare, legal fees, or evaluation costs, are not allowed. Every order is reviewed by PDSES staff, and they may ask for a brief explanation of how a product supports your child's learning. The easiest way to get purchases approved is to choose products that clearly connect to your child's IEP goals or academic needs. Products that come with a standards-aligned curriculum guide make this connection obvious for the reviewer.
