No sticks, picks, or accessories are needed. Students play with their fingertips, thumbs, and palms, making it one of the most accessible instruments available for beginners of any age. The handpan was invented in 2000 in Bern, Switzerland, inspired by the Trinidadian steelpan, the Indian ghatam, and the Indonesian gamelan. It has since become a worldwide instrument used in performance, recording, yoga and meditation, sound therapy, and music education.
