Handpan Drum 22in & 9 Notes K-12 Curriculum Kit
A professional 22-inch handpan drum in D minor with 9 hand-tuned tone fields paired with a 23-page standards-aligned curriculum covering music performance, sound science, and mindful self-regulation from Kindergarten through 12th grade.
What's Included:
The 22-inch handpan drum features 9 precision hand-tuned tone fields in the key of D minor (D3, A3, Bb3, C4, D4, E4, F4, G4, A4), crafted from high-quality steel using advanced tuning technology. The D minor pentatonic scale means there are no wrong notes. Every tone field harmonizes with every other tone field, so anything a student plays will sound musical from the very first tap. No sticks, picks, or accessories are needed. Students play with their fingertips, thumbs, and palms, making it one of the most accessible instruments available for beginners of any age. The instrument produces a rich, resonant, overtone-laden sound that sustains for several seconds after each tap. A complete accessory set is included.
The handpan was invented in 2000 in Bern, Switzerland, inspired by the Trinidadian steelpan, the Indian ghatam, and the Indonesian gamelan. It has since become a worldwide instrument used in performance, recording, yoga and meditation, sound therapy, and music education. Its warm, ethereal tone and intuitive playing style make it especially well-suited for students who struggle with traditional instruments or who need a low-barrier entry point into music-making.
The curriculum follows three integrated learning tracks across all grade bands. The Music Track covers melody creation, rhythm, scales, improvisation, composition, multi-section formal structure, world music connections, and recording and production. The Science Track covers vibration, pitch, frequency, resonance, overtones and the harmonic series, damping, sound wave propagation, and materials science. The Wellness Track covers Ding Breathing (a breath-pacing technique using the instrument's sustained tone), body state identification, personal regulation planning, stress and focus data collection, and the neuroscience of how rhythmic auditory stimulation affects brainwave entrainment, cortisol levels, and parasympathetic activation.
The 23-page curriculum guide covers four grade bands (K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12), each with learning objectives, detailed activities, and alignment to National Core Arts Standards (creating, performing, responding, connecting), NGSS (waves, sound, vibration, energy), CCSS Math (counting, fractions through note values, frequency ratios, statistical analysis), CCSS ELA (descriptive vocabulary, informative writing, research papers), Health Education (stress management, nervous system science), CASEL SEL competencies (self-awareness, self-management), and CTE career pathways (music production, music therapy, sound design, wellness facilitation).
Younger students explore the handpan through free play, discover high and low notes, practice echo rhythms, feel vibration by touching a ringing tone field, and learn Ding Breathing as a calming technique. Elementary students create and share melodies using a numbered tone field system, explore rhythm patterns with varying note values, investigate the relationship between tone field size and pitch, and discover how the handpan's hollow chamber creates resonance. Middle schoolers learn the D minor scale and interval structure, compose pieces with contrasting sections, measure tone field frequencies with a tuning app, research the handpan's cultural roots in three world music traditions, and collect stress and focus data across multiple playing sessions. High schoolers compose extended works with formal structure, analyze the harmonic series using a spectrum analyzer, research brainwave entrainment and music therapy neuroscience, record and produce handpan performances using basic audio equipment, and connect their skills to CTE career pathways in music production, performance, and wellness.
Includes 8 printable worksheets: My Handpan Sounds (K-2 tone field exploration), Rhythm Patterns (K-2 with Ding Breathing check-in), Melody Map (3-5 numbered sequence composition), Sound Vibration Experiment (3-5 size, pitch, and sustain investigation), Composition Journal (6-8 multi-section piece with frequency measurement), Mindful Music Log (6-8 five-day stress and focus tracker), Acoustics Lab (9-12 harmonic series analysis with spectrum data), and Music and Wellness Research (9-12 ten-day data tracker connecting personal playing data to published neuroscience).
Designed for homeschool families, music classrooms, therapy settings, mindfulness programs, and after-school enrichment. Curriculum guide delivered digitally as a PDF after purchase.
